Q: What is Sodium Hydroxide, or Lye? And why do you use it to make soap?
A: Sodium hydroxide, otherwise known as Lye or NAOH, is an absolute requirement to make all true soap. Contrary to myth, “lye soap” is not harsher than store-bought soap - in fact, it is typically considered to be far gentler, as it contains no artificial detergents or sulfates. Lye and oils/fats are calculated into the proper amounts, mixed and emulsified together, poured into a mold, and a chemical reaction called “saponification” occurs over 24-48 hours. After this time period, the oils and lye have turned solid - it has turned into soap. After this process is complete, no lye is left in the recipe - just gentle, nourishing, glycerin-rich handcrafted soap! After 24-48 hours, the soap is cut into bars and cured for 4-6 weeks to dry out, harden, and ensure the most gentle and long-lasting soap possible.
Q: Why do some of your products contain preservatives, like the lotions and scrubs? Isn’t it better to go preservative-free?
A: Certain bath and body products really require the use of a preservative, such as lotion, which is a water-based product. Products that contain water will quickly grow bacteria and mold without a preservative, and we want our customers to enjoy their lotions safely! The preservatives we have chosen are paraben-free and used in the safe recommended amounts, which are incredibly small when spread out among an entire batch of product. Our body scrubs also contain a paraben-free preservative since they are frequently stored in the shower and people often dip wet fingers in the jar to scoop product out. Without a preservative, the scrub can grow dangerous bacteria very quickly. While we love the idea of keeping every single product 100% natural, there are a few cases where the pros of using a safe, paraben-free, well-tested broad-spectrum preservative to prevent dangerous bacteria and mold growth outweigh the cons. As with all of our ingredients, we have performed extended research to make decisions on which ingredients we believe are safest and best for our customers. The reason bar soap does not require a preservative is because of its naturally high PH.
Q: Do you accept custom orders?
A: I do occasionally accept custom orders on a case-by-case basis. Due to the time it takes me to prepare custom orders, the minimum quantity I will make as a custom order is a 16-bar loaf of a single design/scent. I will sell in quantities of 16, 32, 44, 48, 64 or 128 bars at a time. Contact me directly for a quote, since pricing will vary based on desired design + essential oils/fragrance, quantity desired, etc. Keep in mind that the fastest a custom order can be completed before shipment is approximately 6 weeks, and can be up to 7 weeks for a significantly large order.
Q: What are your shipping and processing times?
A: We ship our packages within 2-3 business days of receiving your order. All orders ship via USPS priority mail, and you will receive a tracking number upon shipment.
Q: Do you accept returns or cancellations?
A: If you need to cancel an order, please email us within exactly 1 hour of placing your order. We will accept cancellations strictly within the 1 hour time frame, no questions asked. After the 1 hour time frame, we are unable to accept any cancellations. Due to the nature of our items, we are unable to accept any returns or offer refunds. We do our best to offer the most helpful and detailed product descriptions as possible, and we always include a complete ingredient list for our customers to make informed decisions. We cannot offer refunds if you do not like the scent or product you ordered, but will happily suggest alternatives to try on a future order, if you wish. Our one exception is for items damaged in transit. We package our products as safely as possible, but shipping carriers occasionally make mistakes. If something arrives broken or otherwise damaged in transit, please email us a photo of the damaged package and product within 3 business days of receiving the package, and we will either offer a full refund or ship a product replacement promptly - your choice. Customer satisfaction is a tremendous priority for us, so please come straight to us with any concerns or problems!
